This coat, of a similar form to the angarkha, a South Asian outer robe, was worn by Syed Abubakar bin Husain Aljunied's grandfather, Syed Haroon bin Hassan Aljunied, on the occasion of his wedding. The Aljunieds are one of the prominent Hadhrami Arab Peranakan families in Singapore and the region. Hailing from Hadhramawt in Yemen, the Aljunieds had established themselves as traders in Palembang first before Syed Omar bin Ali Aljunied (1792-1852) went over to Singapore after the British had set up a trading post in 1819.
