"Faal I" displays an uncommon subject matter for print works produced by an Indonesian painter and printmaker, A.D. Pirous (b. 1931, Meulaboh, Indonesia). Trained in the art school in Bandung, Indonesia, A.D. Pirous became known for his calligraphic abstract paintings and prints that largely draw from Qur'anic verses, Islamic manuscripts, and tombstones since the early 1970s onwards. In this print, however, Pirous drew its visual inspiration from what seems to be a collage of Chinese divinatory system, Taoist cosmology, and depictions of deities from Chinese Buddhism.
