This is one of 5 undated paintings executed in a monochromatic Chinese ink on paper, signed and sealed by Khoo. The subject matters of these works revolve around the orchid (a popular literati symbol), scholar rocks, and various forms of ceramic pots and furniture. These works are exemplary examples of early migrant artists who keep to the literati traditions with influence by the Shanghai School, which carry a sense of inventive brushworks that pushes away from traditional boundaries. They also provide insights of local networks and art activities of a group of migrant artists who follows the traditional literati tradition and also illuminate relationships amongst art and cultural networks between Southern China and Singapore. On top of his multiple roles as a philanthropist, educator, reformist, poet, scholar, failed-merchant, chief editor, political commentator, and culturalist, Khoo Seok Wan was also known as a painter. These paintings further reinforce Khoo’s reputation as a modern-day literati who has come to call Singapore his permanent home.
