Jaafar Latiff was an abstract painter distinguished for his inventive approach in the batik medium, although he also painted in acrylic and had a short stint experimenting in digital art and animation. His artistic practice was concurrent with his lifelong role as an educator. Shortly after leaving Baharuddin Vocational Institute in 1990, Jaafar moved to the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) to take up a position as a Media Specialist between 1991 and 1992. Occasioned by the access to technology, Jaafar began making computer-generated art, using bitmap graphics editor DeLuxe III on a Commodore Amiga personal computer. Jaafar’s Metamorphosis series was produced during this period. Six prints from the series—1/92 to 6/92—were included in the Singapore Festival of Arts: ASEAN Selection, an exhibition organised by National Museum Art Gallery and National Arts Council in June 1992.
