Ismail Hashim (1940-2013) was an artist and educator who became an important figure in art photography in Malaysia. He was known particularly for his hand-tinted gelatin silver prints, rich in detail of the everyday humdrum and are often imbued with humour and irony in their titles. Ismail started taking photographs in 1973, when he met his lecturer Robert Crock in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang. Ismail was often interested in scenes from the everyday street life he encountered. His compositions often capture the patina of poetic decay of ordinary objects amidst their external world. Remembering ‘Joget Modern’... I am forlorn suggests a melancholic nostalgia of a moment that is past framed by an assortment of broken and used plastic chairs, lined in a single row and stacked in a corner.
