The cup and saucer were made specifically for drinking hot chocolate, tea, or coffee. The saucer, called a "trembleuse" (French for "trembling"), has a raised gilt-edged holder in the middle so that the cup sits securely to prevent it from slipping and the liquid spilling. These were especially useful for people who suffered from weakness and tremors in their hands, as well as those accustomed to taking breakfast in bed.
