This is a studio photograph of a Peranakan couple, Mr and Mrs Tan Hoon Siang. The lady is dressed in a baju panjang and sarong, while the man wears a western suit. Ornate mother-of-pearl inlaid furniture, decorative vases and other props like teacups, a clock and a sculpted dog suggest a distinguished and wealthy presence.Mr Tan Hoon Siang was employed at P&O Shipping company, where his son Tan Chong Beng (1908 – 1975) followed suit. In 1933, Tan Chong Beng married Lee Chuan Neo, (1912 – 1989) from a Peranakan household at 97 Devonshire Road in Singapore. As was custom of the time, they were match-made by their mothers. The donor, Mona Tan is the granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Tan Hoon Siang.
