Chng Seok Tin made several prints from this set of collograph plates, which still bear remnants of blue and brown inks used in previous prints. These residues highlight the inherently transposable nature of the print medium, and its potential to be used to develop other works including sculptures. Climbing is a recurring motif in Chng’s prints from the early to mid-1990s. When Chng moved back to Singapore in 1986 after spending a decade in Europe and North America, she was greeted by a modern, urbanized metropolis. Climbing represents her perception of a society consumed by greed and materialism. It also reflects Chng’s own journey as an artist, securing footholds as she furthered her experiments in printmaking. The exaggerated dynamism of the figures here mirrors Chng’s efforts to adapt to working as an artist with visual impairment.
