“Muk yu” (木鱼) or “wooden fish” was a form of Cantonese oral storytelling where the storytelling would recite the story in four-character verses with a simple wooden percussion. In Singapore, these storytelling sessions were often conducted in traditional Cantonese teahouses in Chinatown.Volumes 1,2,3 and 6 of this set titled “Bei Jie Hong Luo”(背解红罗)were printed by Yong Cheng Shu Ju (永成书局Yong Cheng Bookshop) in Singapore, while volumes 4 and 5 (with an almost identical cover) were published by Da Xin Shu Ju (大新书局,Da Xin Bookshop) in Guangdong province. In the past, it was common for Chinese publishing houses to copy books and republish them. This content was likely first published in Guangdong province and then republished in Singapore with an identical cover.
