Nap Jamir II was born in 1952 in Manila. He was introduced to photography by his photographer father. These are some of Nap Jamir II’s earliest works but also some of the earliest examples of conceptual photography in Southeast Asia. They investigate the relationship between the still and moving image, as well as the materiality of the photograph. Jamir’s conceptualism takes a deconstructionist bent, questioning the image and the broader discourses surrounding it. The Auto-retrato series were the first artworks Jamir exhibited. He was already starting to make experimental films at this time, which can be observed in the use of seriality and narrative. In physically tearing parts of the photo in #2, and letting blood seep down the walls of the gallery (in the original presentation), Jamir playfully tries to connect the image with reality.
