Gold and silver slippers (kim suah eh) like this pair were given to the groom-to-be during the Lap Chye ceremony of a Peranakan wedding, when gifts were exchanged between the families. Traditionally, his fiancée embroidered the slippers by hand herself. But a shopmark, “Kwong Sung”, on the lining raises the possibility that this pair was made by a craftsman. Executed in a variety of metal threads, the Union Jack, flag of the United Kingdom, together with a whimsical interpretation of the flag of Scotland (the Saltire) reflect the Anglophilic sentiments of some in the Straits Settlements at the beginning of the 20th century.
