Foo Tee Jun won the Cultural Medallion in Photography in 1989. He was a prominent club photographer for decades, holding numerous committee positions at the PSS and acting as a salon judge for many competitions. Sampans is representative of the type of photographs popular in the photography clubs at the time, emphasising photographic technique, composition and decorative elements. it was made during the early years of Konfrontasi, when the sampan boatmen had no business and all the boats were docked. Foo used them to create a beautiful pattern while also capturing a historical moment.
