Born in 1973, Nyein Chan Su, mostly known as NCS, studied painting at the State School of Fine Arts in Yangon. In 2006, he started making photographic inkjet prints on vinyl and drew on them with red acrylic and enamel paint, to reference the language of advertising. The red text is a direct reference to the red-tape bureaucracy of Myanmar. Portrait in Black uses a photograph of NCS’ aunt, Toe Toe Lwin, who was a movie starlet – this was shot on set. He used her image to refer to Aung San Su Kyi while the title “Portrait in black" referred to the time she was under house arrest.
