This Union Jack belonged to Robinson's department store and was brought to Changi prison camp by Charles George Simpson, a manager at the store. Simpson was interned in Changi during the Japanese Occupation and was later transferred to Sime Road camp along with the other civilian internees.A small number of Union Jacks were hidden in the internment camps by both military and civilian internees and used for special occasions or burials.
