This is a brass pot owned by a peranakan family. The pot was used exclusively to bake kueh bingka ubi, a traditional Malay/Nyonya kueh made primarily of tapioca, coconut milk, and sugar. The cake would have been baked in this pot over a charcoal fire, with additional burning charcoal placed on the lid of the pot for even heat distribution. This pot bears charcoal marks on its lid which reflect this unique way of cooking. This pot was passed down through three generations of peranakan women, along with the recipe and skill of making kueh bingka ubi. However, when the family moved to an HDB, the pot was incompatible with modern ovens and was no longer used.
