Nguyễn Minh Thành (b. 1971) is known for innovative, introspective artworks. His works often make use of his own self-portrait, or images from his family and childhood, combining these motifs with innovative forms of art-making, as well as works in ink on Vietnamese handmade dó paper. A graduate of Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 1996, he was a member of a group of young, experimental artists working in the circle of their teacher Trương Tân. This early work by Nguyễn Minh Thành shows the development of the artist’s style, while still a student at Hanoi University of Fine Arts. Like many of the works produced by this group of artists, it shows a strong engagement and interest in text, using the text as a whimsical complement to the image.
