Postcard titled 'Batavia, Hotel des Indes (Rechtervleugel)'

In the early 1900s, with steam ship travel in vogue and made easier with the opening of the Suez canal, travelers would often put up in hotels at various designated stops in the region. This postcard depicts the pavilion and lawn on the Hotel des Indes in Batavia (modern-day Jakarta, Indonesia). The Hotel des Indes was established in Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia) in 1829 by a French man named Antoine Surleon Chaulan. Originally named Hotel de Provence, it was renamed Hotel des Indes in 1856. The hotel survived until 1971, when it was demolished to make space for a shopping mall. This postcard depicts the cloistered walkway along the right wing of the hotel, an architectural style adapted from Europe.
