This postcard depicts the Victoria Memorial Hall in the foreground, with the Europe Hotel in the background. The sender appears to have been more interested in the Europe Hotel - an arrow on the photo points out the ‘Hotel D’Europe’, where the sender may have been staying. The Europe Hotel, Singapore, was established at Hill Street in 1857. It later shifted to Beach Road and then to the Esplanade in 1865. It was later rechristened the Grand Hotel de l’Europe, and finally renamed the Europe Hotel in 1918 after a change in ownership. It was demolished in 1934 to make way for service flats.
