Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles established a British East India Company trading factory in Singapore in 1819. In 1830, after Raffles’ death in 1826, his widow Lady Sophia Raffles published the Memoir of the Life and Public Services of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles. This favourable review of the book was published in The Edinburgh Review and was written by Captain Basil Hall of the Royal Navy, a friend of Raffles who he first met in Java in 1814.
