Mary Angela Bateman was one of the thousands of women interned in the cramped Changi Prison by the Japanese during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore between 1942 and 1945. She was married to a charted accountant based in Singapore, and was 60 years old when she was captured in 1942. She recorded her experiences through a series of drawings which documented various parts of the prison as well as daily life.
