Digital mobile services based on the Global System for Global Communications (GSM) was first introduced to Singapore in 1994. The Nokia 6150 mobile phone, which operated on the GSM technology, was first launched in 1998. The mobile enabled phone users to send and receive short message service (SMS) messages of up to 160 characters long. Such mobile devices allowed users to communicate through both audio and visual means and its portability meant greater ease of convenience for users.
