This pocket watch is inscribed ‘To Tan Kim Tean from WM Paterson Singapore 1865/Tan Hap Leong to Tan Cheng San 6-3-24’ on its inner case, while the outer case is decorated with a lightly-chased guilloche pattern.WM Paterson of Paterson Simons & Co. gifted this watch to Tan Kim Tian (1832-1882) in 1865, the year Tan Kim Tian left his company to establish with his eldest son Tan Beng Wan (1851-1891), Tan Kim Tian and Son Steamship Company. It was one of the first firms in Singapore to change their fleet of sailing ships to steamships.This came from the collection of Botan House, which was built around the 1880s.
