This photograph shows a group of nyonyas seated around a table. Printed along the border is ‘May 73’. In 1839 the French government made public technical information about the production of photographs, prompting a fervour for photographic technology which quickly spread from Europe to Southeast Asia. The first photography studios in the Dutch East Indies and the Straits Settlements were established in the first decades of the 1840s.
