A Scottish officer in the East India Company, William Farquhar served in India and Melaka. He was appointed as the first British Resident and Commandant of Singapore in 1819. This lithograph by M. Gauci was based on an oil painting by John Graham-Gilbert (1794-1866), a Scottish portraitist in the late 1820s.
