The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 brought a new era of massive trade growth and increase in the number of steamships operating in Southeast Asia. This is a view of Victoria Dock at Tanjong Pagar. Officially opened on 17 October 1868 by Sir Harry Ord, Governor of the Straits Settlements, Victoria Dock was the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company’s first dry dock.
