Gift of the Lim Family in memory of Edna Chong Kim Neo

Decorated with roses against a striped background, these beaded panels would have been used as vamps for a pair of slippers. Such footwear was known as kasot cha kiak, or open-toe slippers, which became increasingly popular in the 1930s. This was made by Chong Kim Neo (1916-1972), who made beaded slippers and garments from her home as she did not own a shop.
