Henry. Keppel’s, A visit to the Indian Archipelago, in H.M. ship Maeander, with portions of the private journal of Sir James Brooke, K.C.R.

This is the first edition of Sir Henry Keppel’s (1809-1904) account of his travels in the East Indian Archipelago on board the H. M. Maeander. Comprising of two volumes, the book consists of a large folding engraved chart of the Indian Archipelago showing Keppel’s journey, 8 lithographed prints, and an original autographed letter from James Brooke to Lady Keppel. Henry Keppel had a long and distinguished naval career that took him across the seas and in several historic skirmishes including the First Opium War. He was a close friend of James Brooke (1803-1868). Brooke as Rajah of Sarawak was known for his role in putting down the pirates in Borneo. In 1847, Keppel as captain of H M Maender assisted Brooke to Labuan, an island of Borneo. Included are descriptions of his visit to Hong Kong, Manilla, and the Malay archipelago. He returned to England by way of Australia in 1850. It also contains chapters with general information on piracy.
