In 1784, Thomas Daniell received permission from the East India Company to travel to India to paint its landscapes. On his way from England to India and back, he and his nephew William passed through the East Indies and painted some views there. In this watercolour, Daniell presents a picturesque view of Eucheconing, near Anjer Point on the northwestern coast of Java facing the Sunda Strait. A scene of local trade takes place in the foreground, against a backdrop of a small village and a mountainous landscape.
