The book contains various tracings and painted illustrations. Its first page is filled with colourful flowers around a photograph of a man, probably the author. Flowing scrolls are inscribed with ‘Schilder Boeken’ (painting books) and ‘Van heer – Han Hong Yoe’. In Indonesia, photography studios were established by the Chinese as early as the last decade of the 19th century. Many of these were established by recent immigrants from China and came to rival the European-owned studios which dominated the market.
