This lithograph features a portrait of the German missionary to China Karl Gutzlaff. Based on an original work by the English artist based in China George Chinnery, this portrait shows Gutzlaff in the dress of a Fujian sailor. Gutzlaff was an early missionary to Siam, Batavia and later to China, and was a prolific writer and translator of the bible, with some of his publications printed in Singapore.
