The Ensign camera was produced by Houghton-Butcher Manufacturing Co. Promoted with the tagline ‘Cameras for the Tropics’, it was available in Robinsons and Co. as early as 1909.Before the advent of the portable camera in the late 19th century, the taking of photographs was limited to the studio. However portable cameras remained affordable only to the rich until the first decades of the 20th century.
