This tubeskirt or tapis tapis, worn by women, demonstrates the affinity of the Abung people for gold embroidery and ornamentation with sequins. On a richly coloured backdrop, vegetal scrolls border and mark the middle of this tapis while the sequins surround the scrolls and add a textural dimension. These scrolls were increasingly seen on the Abung’s textiles as they converted to Islam, which placed importance on moderating figural representations.
