The garo, or gara, is a sari decorated with Indo-Chinese embroidery, a textile that is strongly identified with women of the Parsi community. Parsis are followers of Zoroastrianism, one of the oldest religions in the world. They migrated to India from Central Asia/Persia during the 8th to 10th centuries. By the late-18th and 19th century, Parsis were instrumental in facilitating the China trade, where they traded opium, cotton, tea and silk between Canton, India and the British Empire.
