This wedding dress has a lace bodice decorated with applique flowers, which extends elegantly into the chiffon skirt. The off-shoulder style was popular during the 1970s. The white wedding dress became popular during the late 1940s, and Sylvia Kho is one of Singapore’s earliest postwar bridal designers specializing in Western-style white gowns. Initially starting as a home-based business in 1946, she later went overseas to acquire western dressmaking and other bridal-related service skills. In 1968, she established a boutique, offering a complete bridal service in Tanglin Shopping Centre. Its clientele included brides of wealthy businessmen, politicians, and members of royalty from the region. She was inducted into the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame in 2017. She also learned Peranakan beadwork and sewing from her nyonya mother.
