This bible, printed in Malayalam, once belonged to a Malayalee Christian who arrived in Singapore from Kerala in the late 1980s to study theology at the Far Eastern Bible College in Gilstead Road. The College is one of the oldest theological seminaries in Singapore and was founded in 1962 by the late Rev Dr Timothy Tow, founder of the Bible-Presbyterian Church movement in Southeast Asia. Malayalam is the mother tongue of the Malayalees, who form the second largest group within the Indian community in Singapore. The Malayalees originate from Kerala, located on the south-western coast of the Indian sub-continent. There is a sizeable Christian community in Kerala, and the parents of the bible’s donor, Mrs Elizabeth Mahadevan, were among the earliest Malayalee Christians to arrive in Singapore from Kerala in the 1930s.
