Poster for the Stage Club "The Importance of Being Earnest"

This is a large poster on the 1948 Stage Club production of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”. This was performed in conjunction with the third anniversary of the Stage Club, which was formed after the war in 1945. Based on the production’s location at the Victoria Theatre, it is clear that the audience for Stage Club productions at the time were likely colonial and elite. The Stage Club was formed immediately after the war and focused on Western oriented productions for the entertainment of the English-educated audiences in Singapore who were largely expatriate.
