This silk handkerchief is embroidered with a technique known as alternating satin stitch, a method of embroidery found primarily in Indonesian needlework. The images of Chinese figures are contained within a medallion at the centre of the textile. Auspicious motifs such as flowers, phoenixes and the Buddhist eternity knot (banji in Baba Malay) also decorate the handkerchief. This is an important and diverse collection of Peranakan Chinese beadwork and embroidery from Indonesia. It contains unusual forms of beadwork and embroidery and are reflective of the fondness that Peranakan Chinese throughout Southeast Asia have for bright colours and ornate decorations.
