The studio established in 1877 by the German photographer Gustave Richard Lambert (1846–1907) became one of the most famous and enduring in Singapore. It catered to both visitors and local residents. Lambert himself left Singapore in 1885, but the business continued to be run by different European managersuntil it finally closed in about 1919. Many of the Lambert photographs have inscribed titles and inventory numbers, corresponding to catalogues issued by the studio.
