Sidetable with carved lion

This intricately carved teakwood table was once found in the ancestral home of Tan Jiak Kim, Panglima Prang. It is decorated with auspicious motifs like dragon heads, clouds and a lion dog at the centre of the stretcher between the four legs of the table. Such tables would have probably been made in pairs and placed facing each other on either side of the reception hall of a Peranakan household.Panglima Prang was a prominent 19th century mansion on River Valley road in which the family of Tan Jiak Kim resided. Tan was a prominent businessman and long serving member of the Legislative Council. He was also the grandson of Tan Kim Seng, a highly regarded philanthropist.
