Portrait of Lee Eng Lee

This is a portrait of Lee Eng Lee, the paternal grandmother of Singapore Peranakan playwright Robert Yeo. It is a hand-coloured photograph of the subject in a baju panjang fastened with a set of diamond brooches or kerosang. Her ears are adorned with diamond earrings and her bun is held in place by hairpins.Robert Yeo was born in 1940 to a Peranakan family and grew up with his grandparents in their family homes in Haig Road and Valley Road in Hougang. He has been lauded as being “the most Singaporean of Singaporean writers”.
