In Bali the lion is associated with guardianship and royalty. Carved lion figures are a widespread decorative feature in both temples and aristocratic homes. They are commonly portrayed with wings and elaborately carved manes and tails. More recent examples are brightly painted and lavishly gilt. This example has remnants of such decoration but its condition suggests that it could be a very early example.
