Handwritten copy of Japanese language reader

The exercise book contains chapters and pages neatly copied from a Japanese language book. It belongs to Zheng Mingji (郑明基) who must have started copying the passages starting from 18 January 1943, judging from the date on the cover of the exercise book. Interestingly it is wrapped with the front page of the Syonan Daily, a Chinese newspaper published during the Japanese Occupation. The Japanese made Japanese language a compulsory subject in schools. Many people made the effort to learn the language as it helped boost their employment prospects.
