This is a round conical hat, heavily embellished with embroidery, belonging to northern India. This style of hat would likely have been worn by a person of distinction within the Sunni Muslim community, such as a cleric or Imam, under the turban. The style was popular in west Asia and northern India in the 19th century. Verses from the Quran are embroidered on the hat using a calligraphic style.
