The back of the photograph reads: “8427/ CGY 1897 9th Moon 23rd day/ TCT 1890 June 1917 3rd Moon 19th day”. The catption reads: ‘Chua G(?) Yew / Teoh Cheng Toe M.B.B.S/ June 1917/ Penang SS.’ The studio mark of Keechun studio could be found on the two lower corners of the photograph. This large group of photographs provides important visual documentation of the fashion, studio photography and lifestyle of Peranakans of the Straits Settlements and Indonesia in the late 19th to mid-20th centuries. The collection also allows study of different photographic techniques and covers a wide range of themes, including changing fashions (from baju panjang and baju kurong to kebaya and cheongsam), festive celebrations (weddings, funerals, ancestral rites, Chinese New Year), interiors, transportation and children.
