Made out entirely of tubular beads, this pair of kasut tumit, or slippers with a low heel, is a fine demonstration of the lane-stitch embroidery technique. On the inner sole of the slippers, a shopmark reads ‘Djei Mo Padang’. Padang is a major city on the West Coast of Sumatra, and from which the slippers must have been produced. ‘Djei Mo’ is probably the name of the shop. Alongside the inscription in the Indonesian language is its phonetic transliteration into Chinese script. The direction of transliteration is indicative of how the Peranakans encountered and understood their Chinese heritage first through local eyes.
