This is a revised edition of ‘Hints to Travellers: Scientific and General’, edited for the Council of the Royal Geographic Society by John Coles. John Coles served as the Royal Geographical Society’s Map Curator and Instructor in Practical Astronomy and Surveying for twenty–three years. He revised the first ‘Hints to Travellers’, a collection of articles answering questions frequently asked of the Royal Geographical Society, including an extensive account of the latest surveying equipment and techniques.
