This is a rarely surviving work, revealing the artist’s early practice as a young art student building up technical foundation of realism, through the method of drawing real objects (eg. still life). As reflected from the work, the verisimilitude and three dimensionality of the pictorial image is achieved with emphasis on chiaroscuro rather than linear contour. The work was completed under the tutelage of Chua Mia Tee (Lee’s artist husband). Chua has been widely regarded as one of leading artists of the Equator Art Society and social realist art movement in Singapore.
