This print shows Krishna with the gopis (milk maids). The boy Krishna was often depicted as a prankster, stealing milk and cream from the gopis. This scene depicts an episode where he breaks a pot of milk with a thrown pebble, which ends in him being chastised and punished by his mother, Yashoda. Prints depicting mythological characters and stories were popularized by the artist Raja Ravi Varma and mass produced in his printing press. By the early 20th century, these prints were in almost every home in the form of calendar art or posters. The prints popularized a naturalistic style of painting, deviating from the symbolic Indian imagery. They also created a pan-Indian imagery of the gods, one which exists to this day.
