‘Youth’ is an autobiographical short story written in 1888 by Joseph Conrad. It introduces the reader to the character Charles Marlow who also narrate Heart of Darkness, Conrad’s most famous novel. Joseph Conrad was a seaman and author who visited Singapore and the Raffles Hotel in 1887. He described the hotel in the novel ‘End of Tether’ as being ‘airy as a birdcage’.
