This wooden steamer is made with planks of wood held tightly together in the shape of a bucket by metal rings with a pair of handles and a lid. Wooden steamers like this could have been found in Peranakan and Southeast Asian kitchens during the early 20th century. Steaming was a common metod of preparation for rice, desserts and soups in Peranakan cuisine. The bowl of rice or dessert would be placed within the wooden container. Bamboo and metal steamers were also used.
